For New York food lovers, this place as about as good as it gets! Located down the street from Newport Harbor High School, this proximity allowed me to become a regular, and never once was I served a slice of pizza or pastrami sandwich that wasn't as good as the last time; which is to say, this place is consistent. Consistency is quite an asset when the food you serve is as delicious as it is at Al's. Beside the difficulty parking and confined dining area (perhaps elements that lend themselves to a 5 star rating, considering this is a NY style cafe), it's hard to go wrong when you're looking for enormous portions of delicious food at a satisfactory price.

I'm channeling a bit of my inner Linda Richman from Coffee Talk (OK, that's Mike Myers in early 90s SNL, I know) when I say: " Al's New York Cafe: neither New York nor a Cafe - discuss." An all around solid effort here, in terms of your standard pizza/sub shop/pasta joints. The pizza's not fantastic but it's a hell of a lot better than most, the stromboli would feed an army, the salads are HUGE and better than you'd expect for carryout like this, and, the house favorite here has to be the chicken parmesan sandwich. Really! Try it, if you like chicken parm, you'll probably like it (I don't really like chicken parm, and even I *sort of* like it.) When you're ordering local pizza joint pizza, in my book it's best when it's plain cheese, but my husband and all those who have eaten with him have had good luck with the NYC special - sausage, pepperoni, onion, garlic, and double cheese - even with all of those toppings, it's still edible and it's cooked all the way through - a good mark of a pizza shop that knows what it's doing. (You know what I am talking about, when you get those overloaded, soggy slices? Never happened here.) The place ain't big - there is basically nowhere to sit, and it's usually a frenzy when you go in there - but get it to go and you'll be fine. A solid contribution to the Orange County pizza landscape.

Order Al's Bread Squares, oh my god. It has the perfect amount of cheese and they don't pussy out on the garlic. Eat it fresh though, because it loses its magic after it gets cold. The pizza is awesome, of course. I've had the White Pizza and some other thing I don't remember, but it was equally awesome anyway. The place is a little cramped, so don't bring over all your friends to dine in (unless you have very few friends, in which case I am sorry).

Absolutely the best little hole in the wall restaurant I've ever been to. Great food, awesome service, and close to home. Can't ask for much more.

First, it isn't New York pizza. Big surprise right? It's in Costa Mesa. Don't take this as a mark against it. It's well made pizza. Good Sauce, quality cheese (not frozen dairy-like pellets, like the chains). I'd suggest the NYC special (pepperoni, sausauge, onions, garlic, extra cheese). Also I recently had the white pizza and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you need a quick slice, go for lunch and ask for the lunch special (creative right?): Two slices and a coke for $5. It's pretty hard to beat that.

Its a good pizza. However it is not even close to New York style. If you want real NY pizza go to LaRocco's in San Clemente. The import their water from NYC. It is awesome!! (Don't be confused by imitators in HB - travel south young man, travel south!!!)

Seriously guys... the food is absolutely on point... but Al himself should stay behind the counter and let the pretty young ladies take the orders. Whenever he's there he mumbles under his breath so you can't hear and then yells at you when you ask him to repeat himself. There's no courtesy or appreciation for his customers. Quit acting like the pizza Nazi! I'd spend 10 bucks here 5 days a week as long as I didn't have to see or hear him.

Got many deliveries from this place. The customer service is really good, they were really nice on the phone and accommodating, and the delivery guy was super nice & he delivered the pizza intact (not all smushed to the side like you sometimes get from other places!). The pizza was delicious---good cheese & topping "distribution." Good crust, not too thick (I prefer thin crust). If I need pizza delivery, this is one of my favorites places!

  • Bailey D.

The pizza here is my absolute ideal. Not too saucy, and they have a TON of veggies to choose from (which is a big deal for me since I don't eat meat). We had the veggie pizza, which was loaded with delicious fresh vegetables, and the white pizza, which I loved because it didn't have sauce at all! They have something for everyone here, and the owner is very friendly!

This is no Pizza Hut or Domino's pizza. The pizza here at Al's is good quality and tastes great. I have never been to New York, so can't compare to true NY pizza, but I can tell you this is one of the best pizza places around! They also have great eggplant parmesan and calazones. If you want quality food, this is the place to go!

This was very good pizza. My kids and husband really enjoyed it and they LOVE pizza! Kind of a hole in the wall place but we will definitely get pizza there again.

I've been eating at Al's since 2002 and will never order pizza anywhere else. I grew up in the NE, am very familiar with NY-style pizza, and this is as good as I have found outside of NY. In fact, I was in Manhattan for a little over a week in November, and despite having pizza out with NY native friends, nothing compared to Al's. There's something about the ingredients he uses and how he used them together. The tomato sauce on the pizza is amazing, the cheese is top notch, the garlic in the oil, the quality and texture of the crust.... it's truly addictive. I've also had plenty of the pasta dishes, and will continue to order them as they're fantastic. Every evening, there's a special (lasagna, ziti, ravioli, tortellini, etc.) that includes garlic bread hot out of the oven, and a small green salad. The ziti is usually so large that two people can easily share. The meat sauce is to die for, and I always ask for extra. Al, himself, is often times behind the counter. Come in often enough and he'll greet you like you're an old friend. He might even remember exactly what you like to order and what kind of salad dressing you prefer. ;) And despite the place always hopping (it's that popular with the locals), the employees are totally on top of it - -over the phone and in person. Always friendly service from the cashier, the cooks, and Al himself. Small, local, friendly, good service and great quality ingredients - with good prices. It's no wonder Al has such a loyal following!

Place is out of the way and a little diffcult on parking (use Blockbuster lot in front of La Cave. Great food, good prices and next time I will do pizza, pastrami this time and salad and it was goood and lots of it. Will be a regular everytime I am down south NB way.

Seriously the best pizza! I get the NY White and add Alfredo sauce and extra cheese. TRY IT. You will NEVER go anywhere else!!!

  • Mitra K.

I looked through the reviews and I must say, I'm a little shocked. I thought this place was awesome! The prices were totally reasonable.. for about $10 you get a huge tin of pasta, a salad and garlic bread. The pastrami sandwich - excuse me - the GRILLED pastrami sandwich was delicious, although it may be a little too salty for the weak of heart. I got the Tortellini in a picnk sauce which was great and the angel hair with fresh tomato and garlic and olive oil was great too. I will definitely be back to visit "Al" .. I must say I have to give the owner props who was working on a sunday. I love mom & pop joints!

Was driving back to Costa Mesa from Laguna Beach this afternoon and needed some grub. I ventured down 17th with no particular plan other than to stop at the Wells Fargo to get some cash then find something to eat. Then I remembered Al's. I've been to the 7-11 next door, but until today never made it to Al's. I ordered the Italian Sausage sub and a slice of cheese pizza. The pizza came out first and was excellent....except that the crust was a bit overcooked. The sauce was tasty and the cheese was gooey. There was a bit of olive oil dripping as any New York Style pizza should have. I have to agree with the others--while the pizza was good, actually better than any other pizza I've had recently, it is not as good as getting a slice at a Brooklyn Pizzaria on your way home from a night of drinking. My Sausage sub came up and it was on a warm, crisp French roll. The sausage had a bit of spice to it and was cooked perfectly--completely cooked yet not dried out. The sandwich was filled with green bell peppers and onions and the same tasty tomato sauce that was on the pizza. Fresh, melted mozzarella topped it off. The service was friendly and attentive. The counter girl was busy when I was ready to order so the cook asked me what I was having so he could start it. He asked me if I wanted the slice right away or wait and have it with the sub. The prices are very reasonable. $5.50 for a small sub (about 6") and $2 for a cheese slice. The place it tiny. They must do most of their business as pizza delivery because there are only four tables. The pizza oven and cook line are right out front so you see your food being prepared. The place isn't much to look at, but it is clean and well maintained. In addition to pizza and sandwiches, the menu is rounded out with salads, pasta dishes, and some specialties. I'll have to go back to try the baked ziti and the maicotti.

This is the best pizza in the Newport/ Costa Mesa area. The crust is nice and thin (they now have whole wheat option as well). The White and the Greek are my favorites, but I've heard great things about their other pies too. Be sure to try the salads too. Yummy! It's better to do take-away or delivery, as the dine in option is limited. Very reasonably priced.

  • t n.

The best pizza that I've ever had. I always get the think crust cheese pizza. The crust is perfect, the cheese is perfect, the sauce is perfect. It's just so tasty!!!! The lasagna is great too when they have it. The subs and salads are ok. I wish that they give you more dressing. The owner is nice and the place can get pretty busy. It's a tiny location so I suggest get your food to go. It's next to a Seven 11.

Huge slices of pizza and a steal at two slices + drink for $5!! I hit up this place at least once a week. It's a little hole in the wall, so don't expect anything fancy, but well worth a stop.

I have been to Al's more than once since I live close by and I don't know what people see in it. It's really not very good at. Very greasy pizza. I have a had real Pizza in NY at Lombardi's, the first licensed pizzeria in America, and trust me when I say it is literally a billion times better than Al's. The ingredients were a lot fresher, the crust was thinner plus a lot more crispy, it wasn't as greasy, and the sauce tasted a lot better.

  • Katherine T.

For a total hole in the wall looking place, I'd definitely come back. My bf and I ordered a small Hawaiian pizza. The cheese was thick and stringy, and the crust had this nice toasty action. It was thin overall, but I enjoyed the toastiness of it. The man whom I can only presume to be is the owner made the experience that much more entertaining. He was loud, friendly, and scratched his armpit on the outside of his shirt. Haha. The employees are very friendly, as well. The price was not too shabby, either! I definitely enjoyed this place.

Why buy an expensive plane ticket when you can just cruise down to Costa Mesa for a hot New York slice? Al's New York Cafe is what I imagine as the quintessential cafe. A few outdoor bistro tables spill into a cozy little indoor dining area with a large chalkboard menu adorned with sinfully indulgent words such as "mancotti" and "pizza by the slice". There is a small eating counter which is literlly the only thing dividing the diners from the pizza kitchen where white-apron-wearing cooks toss fresh dough and yell out gruff orders to each other from the ordering counter. There is something about the no nonsense, order or get ouuta heaa attitude that makes the pizza here that much better, that much more authentic. After all, could it really be a New York style pizza if your order was taken like you were some kinda princess? In terms of the pizza's quality and taste, there is no match (at least that I have tried in OC). The crust is no more than a couple millimeters thick, a bit crisp on the bottom, and perfectly soft and doughy on the sauce side. The thin layer of salty, oily mozarella cheese is gloriously melted over the tangy tomato sauce and topped with a few greasy pepperonis which are slightly crispy around the edges from being in the hot oven. There are two approaches to eating this style of pizza: you can either grab the ol' fork and knife, or you can man up, fold it like a taco, and go for it. Either way, it's still delizioso! Al's is definitely my go-to spot for New York style pizza.

Great pizza!! My co-workers enjoy having lunch there!! A little small hole in the wall but did I mention the Great pizza!!

They serve pizza by the slice so that counts for something. It's too bad the slices are average at best - pretty greasy and not crispy.

  • Khuyen P.

Last night the slices of cheese just killed it. I could hardly keep my hands out of the pizza box on the way home. If pizza could smell sexy, low maintenance and affordable, I'd make a perfume out it it.

  • Elton W.

This place isn't bad, but isn't spectacular. Lasagna tastes like lasagna, nothing too special, not super flavorful. Garlic bread is a bit lacking in flavor, salad is good and fresh.

    (3)
  • Ray F.

No really brooklyn thin crust pizza. But a good pizza never the less. I got their NY special it was good, but not great. I have in the past week tried La Rocca's and another place. If you are looking for real Brooklyn thin crust, La Rocca's in HB is the best.

Is it possible to give 0 stars because that's what I would give this place. The pizza is good but I don't think I have ever had such bad customer service, and more than once. The first time I was trying to call in my order and use a coupon I got in the mail. They told me that couldn't honor it. It was for 2 large cheese pizzas for $17. Did they run out of cheese? The second time I decided to go in and order to go. No one said hi or smiled or anything. the owner guy was doing his accounting on the table in there which I thought was unprofessional too. Then he told me my pizza would take 15 min. I waited right outside in plain view of them for about 20 min and then finally decided to go in and check to see how much longer. The pizza was just sitting there. You would think they would bring it out to me or at least holla at me. Lastly the guy who gave me the pizza (different than the guy who took my order) didn't say a word. No "thank you" or " come again." Just a blank stare that basically said here's your damn pizza now get the hell out. So yeah never again will I go there. Massimo's pizza down the road by jack in the box has good pizza, salad, great lunch specials, and cool people. I recommend you go there instead

Chicken Supreme and Al's Squares. If you haven't ordered this than I dont know what to say to you other than in the words of the Governator "DO IT! DO IT NOW!"

What is all this "White Pizza" talk, everyone just pay attention. Al's has been serving up pies for a long long time. Had it last night, NYC extra large please. My friend and I attacked it like rabid dogs. So good.. Zzzzzz But no really it was great, I must admit I don't recall seeing any beer's on tap which would have been great. What most people don't understand is that its impossible to have east coast taste on the west coast. It quite literally is the water. At any rate good food, go there, eat lots and sleep well. Odds of getting pulled over 4 of 10. That much pizza induces random naps.

Best pizza spot in Newport Beach. NY style pizza. Ingredients and cheese here are good. Prices could be better, but then again great pizza always cost more.

  • Sabrina I.

The texture of the pizza crust is as close as West Coast pizza will probably get to East Coast pizza. I commend this place for making the attempt. It was certainly some of the greasiest pizza I have ever eaten, so I would imagine it makes for good hangover food. The fact that you have to put a lot of toppings on it to give it flavor isn't a good sign. However, there was nothing bad about the pizza. It was what I'd call "better than average." This is saying a lot in this area of town. What is up with the food selection, Costa Mesa?? Lots of cheese does NOT always = good food. I think we all agree cheese is good, but it's not a reason to open a restaurant. Unless it's a fondue restaurant. I am not sure why my review has turned into an advice column for O.C. restaurant owners. I think I am just growing bitter because I really had hoped Al's New York Cafe was the "Great White Hope." Actually, since I haven't tried this famous White Pizza everyone keeps talking about, maybe it still has a chance to be said hope. Next time I decide to brave the parking mess which also serves La Cave and Blockbuster, maybe I will give Al's another chance.

I love Al's. It's a great neighborhood spot that's always reliable. Pizza is very good thin crust with a nice mild sauce and real cheese. My daughter and I go there for a take-out pizza now and then, and we both really like it. And I really love the chicken parm sandwich. It's tastes like it could have been made in Brooklyn. There is actually an "Al" too; he's in and out but he's always making sure that everything is right. Overall, Al's is one of the better places to get a pizza in the Newport Beach/Costa Mesa area.

    (4)
  • Mike L.

Al himself may greet you behind the counter with a howyadoin'? but he's incredibly busy pumping out the pizza, meatball subs, and pasta. Get the white pizza, and add pepperoni! This is basically a take-out joint, but there are a couple of tables inside and out front, plus they deliver... Call ahead with your order. I second Gina's remark that the parking lot is impossible.

    (4)
  • Christine T.

I'm a fan. I asked for Tomatos and they totally melted it into the cheese, woo hoo! Yes.

    (4)
  • Tim D.

Great take out pizza. Calzone's are great too. My only complaint would be I wish they did a little more with the salads. It's my go to in Newport for take out pizza. Fresh toppings, love the meatballs and Al the owner is usually there and making sure everyone is being properly cared for. What could be more NY than that?

  • Jeff P.

I'm a huge fan of Pizza and this place rates right up there with the best in So Cal. They have a good sized menu and a very friendly employees. The portions are huge, so come hungry and with a friend.

  • Raleigh H.

it's alright... although their pizza is really greasy the crust is fantastic. i haven't tried much of their other italian dishes but i'm not too impressed with the pizza.

    (2)
  • Erwin L.

I've been to Lombardis and Ray's on Prince St. in NYC and to be honest Al's Cafe kicks their ass. It's got the right balance of sauce, to cheese to meat to crust. The sauce is just right, a little sweet, but not overpowering. And they're not stingy w/ the pepperoni like that joke of a pizza place called Upper Crust. For those of you complaining about greasy pizza, what the F do you think melted cheese, and pepperoni or sausage is made of.??? Just do what my wife does and use a napkin to blot the grease up you wimps.

  • Lauren B.

i usually eat pizza because i am being lazy, which generally means im not willing to leave the peninsula, but al's is well worth the extra few minute drive. good 2 slice special and just good pizza. i havent tried anything else on the menu, but considering how good the pizza is, im sure everything else would be delicious as well.

No, this is not great pizza. Average sandwich place pizza. Routine at best.

  • Bob A.

The pizza crust here is heavenly. It manages to be thin, crunchy, AND soft. How? Who cares? It's freak'n unbelievable. I just discovered this place a couple weks ago. Lived here for 38 years and..... well I don't know, but now that I've found it, it's a regular spot now. If you want a good greasy but light New York style slice, this is the place. Remember, the crust is HEAVENLY.

After fourteen years of being in Oregon, I must say it was an AWESOME delight to have one of my favorite pastrami sandwiches again. The place was busy as usual with "Big" (actually smaller than I remember) Al running the room. I always love a friendly face and also a great slice of za to hold me over until my sandwich gets in my hand. Thanks for all the great times and many to come.

  • Thomas E.

So far I've tried the bbq beef sandwich and the pizza at Al's. The sandwich was what you would expect, good bread and a generous portion. Definitely no complaints there. The pizza is also very good. It does taste like something that you would get at a small joint in New York. The bottom is well crisped, but the middle still has a slight dough texture. If you are truly a fan of New York pizza, you will definitely enjoy theirs. It does get crowded and there isn't much seating. On weekends they do a lot of delivery and take-out, so I suggest going on a slow period such as lunch or something. Definitely a must try though!

  • Tim J.

I went here 3 times and ordered the lunch special. It is 2 slices and a drink for 5 dollars. It's a similar deal to the pizza bakery's 5 dollar 1 slice 1 drink lunch special. I feel that my slices weren't in the oven long enough 3 times in a row. The last time I went there, I ate one slice, went home and put the other in the microwave until the cheese started bubbling. I feel that my microwaved pizza slice was better. The consistency seems off as well, i.e. one time I went there the oil was pouring out and another time there was hardly any oil dripping out. So because of the inconsistency negatively effecting the quality of the pizza, I can't give this more than 3 stars.

    (3)
  • Julia K.

Good pizza. If you want truly authentic New York pizza, you will be disappointed but I think that may be because we just don't get NY water, which is also the secret ingredient in NY bagels. In any case, it is really good pizza-- good sauce and lots of cheese. I've been happier with their individual slices than the whole pie though and I'm not sure why that is. I'll have to do some soul searching on that. My husband, by the way, complains that the bottom of the crust gets charred but I've never noticed or cared. Last night I was craving some eggplant parm and so I decided to give Al's a try. Very dissapointing. Again, sauce and cheese were good but the eggplant was mushy and overdone and the pasta it came with had been so overcooked that it had practically regressed back to flour and water. I saw other reviewers praise the lasagne but I'll be avoiding their entrees and sticking with their pizza from now on...

Awesome pizza! This is pizza, not the crap they try to call pizza at Upper Crust.

  • Peter H.

We stumbled in here one Sunday afternoon at halftime of an NFL game. The half-time show was on and he was watching until we showed up. Being our first time, we had questions and the guy was a real grouch in answering. Was he really that bummed that he was missing the halftime show? It wasn't even the playoffs! He was very cold to us and seemed pissed that we didn't already know what we wanted. One of us got pasta and the other a sandwich. Both were very tasty and I would definitely go back if ever hungry and in need of a quick bite. It tastes better than Promelis (more high end) just across the street. Because it's take-out, the crappy service isn't the end of the world but certainly retracts from the value. The food alone is probably more like 4 stars. I've heard they have awesome pizza too from some buddies.

    (3)
  • Joe RICE L.

4 stars for a solid pizza, and a good sandwich to go with it. Only if it was deli style sandwiches would I call it new york. This will definately have to do tho. Gosh how I miss it

I've only been here once but I myself would say I am more pleased with the service. I ordered a parmesan chicken pasta it took less than ten minutes to get and the cook made sure i was well taken care of. After a couple bites I notice some seeds in there. It was eggplant, which i didn't mind, but I like my chicken. The cook took it and made a fresh pasta with the chicken for me, Talk about service! Thanks Al

If you want Authentic New York Style Pizza dripping with grease and the whole bit, COME HERE! This is the best damn pizza in the world! I travel from Fullerton just to get it. I have tasted hundreds of pizza in dozens of states and I have never had pizza as good as Al's. He is the man. When my wife was pregnant with our first, she ate here 6 days a week. It is the best.

I was craving pizza today. Browsed the Yelp reviews and came across this hidden gem. Ordered the X-large Pizza and lasagna with meat sauce. All I have to say was, Amazing!!!! The lasagna tasted homemade and the pizza just hit the spot. I will definitely come back here again. Lasagna came with a salad and garlic bread. With the food I ordered it was enough to feed 5 people.

Sad to see the decline of what was once a delightful experience. While the phone and counter service has always been abysmal, the food has been, in the past, pretty tasty. But now the whole operation is mediocre at best. We won't be back. We don't expect you to care

  • Rob D.

Al's is nothing fancy and is in a somewhat hidden strip mall. I ordered a slice of pepperoni for $3.00. Al's does one of the better New York style slices that I have had in OC. The slice is a very good size. And, the crust was very good with a fresh and doughy flavor with a nice texture. The portion of cheese was generous and the pepperoni toppings were generous as well. It was an excellent slice.

  • Leena N.

$3 pepperoni pizza?! Shut the front door!!! Haha. This little mom and pop shop pizza place is really a diamond in the rough. The pizza here has that unmistakeable crunchy sound when you bite into it, and the cheese just oozes in your mouth.... Heaven I tell you. There's plenty of parking, the staff is super friendly... I went here before I went to NYC and I went back after my trip to NyC... It's better here. Sorry Apple... TIP: PiZZA!!!

Had a pizza delivered and was very disappointed. Looking forward to a crispy crust "New York" style pizza but what we got was soggy and bland. For the price I expected better. Toppings were plentiful but didn't make up for the lacking taste.

    (2)
  • Al B.

Al's New York cafe reminds me of places I went to growing up back east. Some days me and my employees just want a slice and a coke and this is only place to get it. The pie is New York style thin crust with just the right amount of grease. If you are looking for a hipster gluten free pizza shaped food item, there are plenty of other places to go in Costa Mesa. More slices for the rest of us who appreciate a place that makes you feel like you're in NYC or Brooklyn.

  • Jack M.

The one place I know of where you can get real New York style pizza. Don't live near (unfortunately), so whenever we are close we take advantage of getting some slices. We had errands to run in the area and started getting hunger pains. Needed something to hold us until dinner - 2 slices and a drink $7.00 - can't beat it.

  • Theresa N.

I am not impress about this place. We got three slices of pepperoni pizza for 9 dollars. Three dollars for a slice really? Ugh! The pizza wasn't anything special, for me I thought it was off in taste. Nothing special about the decor just basic, nothing impressive. The owner went around and said his greetings and seemed to skip us. Don't discriminate say hi to all customers specially the first timers.

I got the hot pastrami sandwich and it was delicious. Perfect for lunch or dinner. The pizza looked good but not many places have sandwiches like this place does.

My boyfriend and I were on our way to do some grocery shopping, but decided we needed a quick bite to eat. I checked nearby places, and decided to grab a slice. I opted for a slice of sausage, and my bf went for pepperoni. The restaurant itself is pretty small, I believe there was about three circular tables & two tv's which was perfectly fine. The staff were pretty friendly, and offered small talk about the playoff games. It took about 10 mins for our slices to arrive. We purchased two slices, and two fountain drinks for under $10. We ate our slice in the car, and we both enjoyed our toppings, the crust was thin with the perfect crispy texture we expect from NY pizza. Finally NY style pizza in Orange County that is not bland. I think this is the best pizza we will find to remind us of home. Well done!

Al's is my favorite take out pizza place. Unfortunately, they do not deliver to my area. :( The Pizza is true NY style; slices are the best! If you go with a whole pizza- go extra large because the crust tends to be a little bit thinner and crispier, which I like. I also really enjoy the Greek salad. It has fresh ingredients: romain, feta, grape tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, olives and pepperoncini peppers. The house salad dressing is very flavorful too. I haven't seen a better salad from any other comparable pizza place. It's nice to have a tasty, healthier option (or side). Prices are reasonable.

In my continuing quest for good pizza in the OC the boyfriend offered up Al's New York as an option. Now, allow me to preface the review by saying that unlike my review of Rance's Chicago deep dish (of which I have Chicago-standard expertise), I have never had authentic NY style pizza. With that disclaimer in place, I really enjoyed the pie we picked up from Al's. The crust was nice and thin, soft (I'm not a fan of crunchy thin crusts), the sauce was tangy and the cheese was delicious. We ordered half pepperoni, half sausage to satisfy our respective inner carnivores. The boyfriend was "meh" about the crumbly, dry sausage and actually ended up stealing a piece of my pepperoni. I thought the pepperoni was spot-on. 4/5...still searching for my pizza soulmate in OC!

Absolutely best pizza in Orange County - everybody loves this place - the guys treT you like family and work their butts off - we are regular patrons. The white pizza is amazing and their calzones are the best! Order the chicken Parmesan with pink sauce and its to die for! Sometimes you will actually see Als smiling face working behind the counter! great Food Great service!

Classic. Thin(ish) crust New York style pizza. Slices don't come cheaper round these parts either. 2 huge slices for 6 dollars. I always get extra cheese (no extra charge). Fast service, staff is friendly and super nice. Serves up your slices pipping hot. And walking distance to my casa, and to Wild Goose....reminds me of when I was back in college, stumbling home from the bars to the pizza shop for a big old slice of PIZZA. Ah, sweet nostalgia. Crust is baked to perfection - love that it's not too thick. I haven't strayed too much from my slice with extra cheese, too addicted. My girlfriend goes here all the time and I mean ALL THE TIME. We love it!

I stumbled upon this place while waiting for a few calls from work. I decided to grab a few slices and drink. I felt nothing special about this place as the staff members did not care too much to make it an interesting experience, nor was the pizza good enough to keep me going back. It's tiny, next to a popular bar/night club, and serves up something I could probably make at home. Not saying this was bad, just not worth going out and spending money on.

I was having a major craving for an eggplant sub and Al's was the only place I could find in the area that has it and they deliver! After reading yelp reviews about how rude their customer service could be, I put my bitch face on and prepared to call them. I was quite pleasantly surprised that the girl over phone was very nice and professional. She didn't tell me the ETA but the delivery driver arrived 20 minutes after the phone call. My grilled eggplant sandwich was perfect! Exactly what I wanted! Bread was toasted and the crust of the bread had the perfect crispiness! The marinara sauce... The eggplant... AWESOME!!!! I'm a happy preggo! P.s. $15 minimum for delivery.

Al's is bomb! I've been coming here for years, I usually get the chicken Parmesan, which is really good and only $8.50 for a large, which is pretty big. The pizza is great here too, and the staff is super cool. Awesome little place to grab some good food for a great deal!

New York pizza, you say? That's definitely not what this NJ native would call it, but nonetheless it's pretty good. Based on a few Yelp reviews which said the pizza is better if eaten in-house, my husband and I were thinking about dining in. That changed pretty quickly once we saw the place though. With just a few tables, a blaring television, and a take out style atmosphere, we immediately decided taking it to go was a better idea. The guy sitting outside huffing something from a suntan lotion bottle and the sketchy individuals wandering around didn't win any points either. After only about ten minutes, our "fresh veggie" pizza was ready. A quick peek into to box revealed a nice looking pie piled super high with a ridiculous amount of toppings -- perhaps the most I've ever seen on any pie before. Once we got home, we threw a few slices onto our panini press to ensure a nice crisp bottom crust. The crust was unlike any NY-style pie I've ever had. It was very thick, somewhat chewy, not at all bready (thankfully), and okay tasting. Even with the time the slices spent on the panini press, the crust still wasn't crispy enough for my liking, and it was obvious that it wouldn't have been even straight from Al's oven. The toppings were fresh tasting and overly plentiful so it was a pleasant surprise that it didn't make the crust a soggy mess. However, the plethora of toppings meant that something had to be sparse, and that turned out to be the sauce. There was barely a smear of sauce on this whole pie. The cheese was minimal, too -- fine with me since I'm not a fan of a cheesy mess of a pie. But I really, really wish there was more sauce and less veggies on my pizza. I wouldn't call this pizza NY-style. It is somewhat reminiscent of a Sicilian pizza, though the lack of sauce and abundance of toppings makes it not too much like one. What can I say? I'd rather have more sauce and less toppings on my pie. The search for my perfect pie in OC continues...

The cheese pizza tastes just like the pizza I had as a kid in Brooklyn. Yahoo! I don't leave near there, so I go anytime I have a doctor's appointment at Hoag in Newport Beach. There are other items on the menu - but don't- get a large cheese pizza. Delish!

A coworker of mine was raving about how good the pizza was at Al's. So, we decided to surprise him with his favorite pizza in town. None of us have previously tried the food here, we just took his word for it. Boy were we delighted by how delicious the pizza was. When it comes to good pizza, we (as a group) decided to make our pizza selection simple. This way nothing would mask the taste of the pizza sauce, cheese or crust. SERVICE: Gal on the phone seemed a bit rushed or annoyed. When I asked her about the specials, it was like pulling teeth. However, she was detailed on the description and got the job done right (which is key!). **Delivery man was prompt and friendly. He even brought us plates, condiments and utensils. SWEET** TID BITS: 1) Free delivery (within a reasonable distance) and $15 minimum 2) Ask for the specials. Their latest one was $21 for 1 XL 3 topping pizza, Caesar or Garden salad and garlic bread. ***THE PIZZA GIST*** CRUST: As Goldilocks would say, "it's not too thick, not too thin, but JUST right." I wouldn't call it NY style pizza since the crust is a bit thicker. However, it was the perfect consistency. Not oily, doughy or crispy. I really enjoyed it. My FAVE part of a pizza. SAUCE: tomato sauce tasted hearty. Not watery or tangy. Had a hint of sweetness to it. CHEESE: Fresh mozzarella cheese. Love the stringiness when I take a bite. A bit oily on top of the pizza. PEPPERONI: Crisp and well distributed throughout pizza. Great bold flavors, not too salty. SALAD: Enough to share w/ 3 people. Filled w/ peperoncini, mozzarella cheese, romaine/iceberg lettuce, olives & grape tomatoes. Gotta have something healthy to make us feel less guilty :) **We will definitely be back**

I love this place! They always deliver super quick and I will find myself craving their pizza about once a week! Pineapple and pepperoni is my favorite and their meatball subs are to die for!! Pizza is really hot when it comes out and sometimes the cheese slips off but if you wait for it a few minutes it is amazing!!! My favorite pizza place in OC :))

Pricey and fair. Pass on the gluten free crust. The box tastes better. $50 for two med pizzas and a salad. However the clerk gave us a $5 coupon. That helped. Veggie pizza was waterlogged and water running in the box. NYC was better but still ditch the gluten free crust. I think people get all hyped up when they see "NY" style pizza. Frankly NY pizza is totally overrated. Decent salad, I'll give it that much. I'll stay with Me-n-eds aka south coast pizza. Sorry Al, I tried.

I had the hot sausage and pepper sandwich, and it's an "Oh My God" experience. Soooooo goood. I give the sandwich 5 stars and the actual environment of the restaurant 3 stars. both times I've been there someone loitering at the 7 Eleven next door has hit me up for money. The parking lot needs to be re-done. The center itself is shabby, but the food is Hecka Good.

My husband and I were around the neighborhood and we usually hit up massimos for pizza. Well, the hubby wanted to try this place cuz his brother and sis who have both gone to the adjacent high school said it was good. So we came, and I was surprised that their menu has no prices. So we proceeded to order a small pizza with two toppings and a Caesar salad. The salad was pretty good. They were generous with the dressing, which we got on the side. And then we waited on the pizza. Some other girl brought it out, and she was pretty nice, not like the blonde cashier. The pizza itself smelled pretty good, and I was surprised by the amount of toppings on the pizza! They were very generous also. So we each got a slice and man, was I disappointed......... It was soggy!!!! Wtf? Never in my life have I ever gotten a soggy pizza, not even when I order it with extra sauce! I was very very disappointed. The sauce tasted canned and there was no reason for it to be soggy as they didn't have enough sauce on the slices! I've had better pizza from little Caesars. Never again will I return. We got shoddy customer service. I don't even know how the staff can get away with it, even if they are related to the owner. They seriously need to step it up. Clean up the tables, have better staff that are not rude, and don't make the front of your business your work station. I left very upset and disappointed.

This place has totally gone down hill. I was so psyched when I found it years ago. When it came to delivery and good pizza, this was THE place. And I told everyone about it. But the last several orders have been downright awful; food has been just plain disgusting and orders were wrong. I've asked for ownership to contact me, to no avail. I gave them several chances, but consistency and caring about your customers is important to me.

Wow, what a surprise. I'm sure they have all sorts of pizza here, with tons of toppings to choose from, but the cheese pizza was fantastic. It looks plain and nondescript, but has an indescribable "WOW" factor. It's that extra punch of flavor and crispiness that separates it from just being ordinary cheese pizza. Also had the spaghetti with marinara sauce. Breadsticks were fantastic, salad was alright, and the spaghetti itself was in serious need of more... substance. There is plenty of marinara sauce per serving, but there should be more to spaghetti than just noodles and sauce! But, overall, it's one of the better examples of spaghetti I've had from any pizza joint. Overall rating -- Delicious! Would definitely make another visit when I'm in the area!

If I think of a good New York Style pizza, I think of Al's. Al's New York Cafe is great! The food is delicious, from their pizzas to calzones, sandwhiches, pastas, and salads. Personally, I love their pepperoni pizza and meatball calzone! Al is friendly and awesome and everyone knows him! But most importantly he makes a point to know you!

Got pizza by the slice. Great crust, thin with a little oil to crisp it. Good sauce and cheese with good texture. This is what i think of as a classic, big (10"?) fold in half, moderately greasy, NY style slice. The guys behind the counter seem pretty authentic too. A little surly I suppose, but the real f-ing deal--you know? Toppings were loaded on. I got mushrooms and garlic on one slice. Garlic was fresh. Mushrooms were sliced super thin, which is fine though I prefer thicker sliced shrooms, but that's not a show stopper. Also got a slice of pepperoni and eggplant. A little too much eggplant (also very thinly sliced), but most would probably like that. I saw some whole pies getting made and they were heavily (insanely heavily) topped. Again, probably a plus for most. I gave four stars instead of five because i'd like to see something more creative to choose from--topping choices were pretty standard. The interior is nothing to brag about, but that's not why you go to a place like this. You should go to Al's for great, classic f-ing NY style pizza!

So bummed...the quality of pizza just isn't what it used to be. We have eaten here for 13 years and now the sauce tastes like tomato sauce, the cheese is bland and they burn my food 50% of the time. The service was never the friendliest but the food was so damn good we didn't care, but now... Sorry, Al we have moved on to Nick's in Costa Mesa. Farther but so much better. What happened?

The Pizza is not half bad. But it has to be take out, The staff is loud, inside the place is small as a flea's ass. It's hot, and no atmosphere, plus the staff is hacking and coughing all the time.

  • Gilbert B.

I found out the key--you have to get the dine-in pizza. The dine-in pizza is legit New York style pizza--the only place I have found outside of NYC to perfectly replicate it. You can even fold it in half. The problem with good New York pizza, is that even though the slices are huge, you always tend to eat too much. Also, the service is excellent. I feel like these guys are my family.

I've been eating at Al's for the last 10+years and the food is consistently delicious and the prices are absolutely reasonable for the amount and quality of food you get. Eat here! It'll be a reoccurring experience.

My fav cheese pizza in town Their anti pasta salad (large) is HUGE, not stingy with the toppings either They don't deliver to my house :( but I like it so much I'll still pick it up The past two times I called for pick-up I had bad service with my phone and kept getting disconnected and the dude on the phone was still nice and patient... extra points I can't say I would have been the same ha-ha!

One of my favorite pizza and pasta places. They staff is always great and helpful even when they are slammed. I love the pasta here! I don't think Al gets enough credit for them. My daughters both love the cheese tortellini in his pink sauce! It's a good size order with bread and a salad and one order is enough for them to split. My wife and I get the Chicken Parmesan or meatball Sandwiches both are always perfect. Just the right amount of sauce and toasted baguette! Yummy! It does remind me of a hole in the wall place back in New York and Al is a great story teller and just a really nice guy! well worth the $ and great to take to go and drive down to the beach for a family picnic.

The usual girl here is nice and helpful. The new girl (long blond hair) sucks. I could deal without your attitude. I was tempted to take back the tip I put in your jar. Not only were you rude on the phone you were completely clueless once I arrived. I normally love this place, one of the best pastrami sandwiches around. But if this is what its turning to, ill take my business somewhere else...

Been coming here for years. Best food around ,there meatball sandwich , als squares , pizza, calzones are all great to pick from . If you haven't had als and live close by, your missing out. Better for take out or delivery, not much space to hang out.

  • Jerika B.

I'm sure they have good food, but don't advertise that you deliver and then tell me you aren't gonna start delivering for a few hours when I call. That's frustrating and I won't be "attempting" to eat here again. Not to mention the guy on the phone could have been a little more kind. He was rude and acted like he didn't need my business. Not a great way to run a pizza place... You always need business.

This place has pretty good pizza, but nothing that would compel me to return. They advertise NYC style pizza, which they do accomplish on three fronts: the slices are wonderfully foldable, they serve them with parmesan and red pepper flakes, and the pies are huge. Where it falls short of authentic New York pizza is in the cheese, which is a bit thinner and not greasy enough, and the paucity of sauce. Why does every OC pizza place skimp so much on the cheapest thing? Sauce, more sauce! Back in the eighties, when NYC still had slices on just about every corner, in the pre-gentrification years, I subsisted on those slices for three months. Al's does have the crust down, but I was disappointed, expecting a better pie.

Used to order here all the time, not necessarily for the quality, but for cost/convenience. Ingredients are usually very fresh though, so that's a plus. Today, in new apartment, I tried to order delivery. We are three blocks closer to their restaurant but they refuse to deliver to us! They said they don't go past the street that is our next cross street, even though they routinely went 3 blocks farther before. Very disappointed, kind of feeling like it's discrimination based on street name... They could not explain the logic.

    (1)

Waited forever for delivery. By the time it came the middle was soggy and stuck to the paper like someone dumped water on it...not crusty or hot at all. Cheese was thick cold layer. Was so disappointed.

  • Thai-Johnathon V.

A-OK. I mean, the service is alright, and the location is small, but the real point of this review is for the food, and I must say, this review is based on everything BUT their pizza. hahah, wanted to try something else and see how rounded they were. My lady friend got the chicken alfredo, which was really runny. everything else was fine though, the chicken wasn't too dry, and the pasta was al dente. I got the small calzone, and it was actually pretty tasty, though its basically pizza pocket so you're getting a pizza. But it was still pretty tasty, the juices and veggies were still sweating when it got the table, but after letting it sit for a little, everything came together.

  • Nunya B.

Ordered a large pizza with pineapple and chicken. There was absolutely nothing special about this pizza. The sauce was bland and almost tasteless. The crust almost seemed like a regular pizza you would get at Costco and not a NY thin crust pizza. For the price, it is not worth it. On the good side... they're generous with the amount of toppings they put on their pizza.

    (3)
  • Tylor L.

This place has good food, but the girl answering the phone wasn't apologetic about their delivery radius, which seems to be about a half mile as they don't deliver west of Newport Blvd.

I am so heartbroken by Als. I used to love love love this place for their delicious slices of heaven. The crust was the perfect consistency of thin and foldable while the perfect amount of sauce and cheese graced its surface. The past two time I have ordered from Als have been an epic disappointment. I don't know if it's under new management or decided to change their recipe to cut costs...but the soggy inedible mess that I received is nothing like they used to be. I am very sad about this and will not be ordering Als again.

I wouldn't say that this pizza place is "New York Style" - especially not the service (it was great!). But I still really enjoyed it. My wife and I went a little early and the small seating area was pretty much empty. The TV had on an Angels game but I asked them to switch to the Warriors' playoff game since I'm from up north. They were happy to oblige! We ordered pizza, meatballs and cheesebread. The pizza was not crispy, thin crust like what I expect from New York style but I still really liked it. The dough was softer and the toppings tasted very fresh. The meats were delicious and seemed of higher quality than your standard take-out pizza places. The cheesebread and meatballs were also really good. After we started eating, the locals started coming in. I think that says good things about the place. Also, the service continued to be great with employees coming out and checking on us. They even made some recommendations on how to eat their pizza (try it with Tapatio, it's pretty damn awesome!). Very pleasant staff and darn good pizza. If I'm ever in the area I would definitely make it back. If I lived there, this might be my local pizza joint. Cheers!

I went on a friday night for the first time. I wanted a good slice of pizza and received a decent slice. I think what killed it for me was the dirty tables and weak customer service. The girl cashier had a whatever attitude as she constantly sat down and played with her phone. She definitely didn't want to be there as all she did was complain about everything. Im goin to stick to Ciao's pizza. Much better pizza n better customer service.

Staying in the luxury pad of the Costa Mesa Motel 6 we needed some za on 420. The pink sauce over angel hair was stellar. The crust although a little soggy, was still tasty with good cheese and toppings. Delivery guy was here within an hour. $30 for large pizza and pasta with enough leftovers for a section 8 family of 4. The side salad was also decent.

I'm a calzone kinda girl. This place is incredible for their calzones. Way over the top huge calzones with tons of true, real, mozzarella cheese stuffed. OMG you will want to go back again. They staff worked as as an amazing efficient team together. Don't expect to wait long. Too big to finish so pack it up for another meal. We found the place on a Thursday night and pizza boxes were flying out the door. Next Thursday we are going back for pizza.

Pizza quality is highly overrated. Costs way more than it should. Also, the website says they open at 11am, but when I showed up in the afternoon, I found out that they don't open until 4pm. I guess high school kids and broke people would like something like this, but if you seek GOOD pizza, look elsewhere.

3.5. liked the taste and size of the small nyc special pizza. one big issues, probably because of the amount of toppings on this pizza, was that they and the cheese kept sliding off. it was a real bitch to eat. i wouldnt hesitate to go back and try another type of pizza.

  • Jeremy L.

This place is hard for me to rate. On one hand they have great pizza, but for me, there's no way to truly enjoy it at its best. Let me explain... First, I do NOT do delivery for nice pizza. If it's over $15, I'm going to eat it when it's fresh. Herein lies the problem. Al's is situated in a strip behind La Cave next to a 7-11. Their inside is very small with only a couple small tables to eat at if you wish to enjoy your pizza at its freshest. If you want to ENJOY your pizza then it's impossible. You're at a tiny table next to a bunch of pre-folded pizza boxes forced to listen to the cooks and staff converse about things that you'd rather not hear. So the pizza gets a 4/5, but since there is no way for me to enjoy it when it's fresh, I have to take away a star. The last pizza I got was canadian bacon, mushrooms and garlic. Despite it being rather expensive unless you have a coupon, it was a tasty pizza.

This is some very delicious za. I don't just throw pizza compliments around like some pizza compliment throwing guy. I have a refined pizza pallet and am extremely studious when it comes to this glorious subject. But at the end of the day I am only one man, with simple tastes and you really can't go wrong with a pepperoni slice. Al's really brings the bizzniss.

    (4)
  • J K.

Love Al's. Never had an issue and the pizza is solid. I'm from CA so can't comment if it is "true NY style" like some of the others but I know what I like and my family likes. Solid place for a quick mid week lazy meal or pick up for a ball game.

4.5 Stars. I am a huge fan of New York style or thin crust pizza. My favorite is Laventinas Big Cheese on the peninsula. Today I didn't want to drive down on to the peninsula because of the boat parade so I searched YELP for an alternative and found Als. It's a little more expensive than Laventinas so I marked it down one star to 4 stars. But that said, the sauce is very flavorful with a heavy garlic character and the cheese is high quality. I measure pizza by trying simple cheese and pepperoni and Als did not fail me on the topping. Again, high quality and no shortage of pepperoni on my pie. In fact I couldn't take a bite without pepperoni. As much as I still like Laventinas and give them a high mark I now have a new pizza joint and won't be driving back down to the peninsula if Als keeps baking me a pizza as good as this one was. This pizza gets 4.5 stars. If you like thin crust and big flavor this is your place.

Ordered delivery last night. Have a very user-friendly online ordering service, choose through whole menu, add notes and even include tip. Was quoted an hour, but they showed up in under 30 minutes. Ordered the veggie pizza and a side of garlic bread ($15 delivery minimum) The pizza was COVERED in veggies, which I actually like, but may not be for everyone. I feel like I'm getting my money's worth this way. I liked the dough, it was a bit soggy in the middle however, which makes for difficult eating. Garlic bread lacked flavor and was a bit stale, but I only paid $2.50 for it. I would order delivery from them again but might shop around . . .

Do not go here!!! Soggy pizza! If you like uncooked pizza this is the place for you. Picked up a slice and everything fell apart. Cheese and meat barely cooked. You're better off ordering dominoes.

DO NOT order from here. The worst customer service. They refuse to deliver 3.6 miles from their business.

What is it with the service at this place? They have great pizza and what not but the customer service here is non-existent. The girl that works behind the counter now and again just doesn't care. It's almost like you are pissing her off because you decided to order from them. Pizza is good though and worth a visit if you can deal with the massive attitude.

If this is NY pizza then I'll make sure to avoid it when I visit NY. The pizza fell apart when attempting to eat and I've had better flavored pizza out of my microwave. The place was a sauna. I know its near the beach, but air conditioning would be nice.

I have been living near this hole in the wall restaurant for a year and a half and have finally gotten around to trying them out. I am not a pizza lover, not that it does not taste good but because I know it is more unhealthy for me than other things I could eat. Anywho, the place is more of a take out or delivery place and has three tables inside an two more outside for those who opt for sitting down. They have pizzas to calzones to pastas to salads. We usually get their pizza special, two slices of pizza and a soda for $5 even. The size is comparable to a slice from Costco so they are pretty big. The New York style gives it a flat bread with a bit of a nice crunch to it. For the size and value, this is cheap and awesome! Love it. Service is always excellent and the staff is always ver nice.

I'm always looking for the best pizza place, whether it be NY, Chicago, or whatever the hell style. Since i'm from Jersey, I'm particularly fond of floppy greasy NY style pizza so I thought I'd give this place a try. I've been hearing it's the real deal for a long time. Welp, it just didn't live up to the hype. I didn't think it was thin enough, floppy enough, definitely not GREASY enough or salty enough. Maybe my hopes were just to high, but I drove 15 miles just to try this pizza expecting to be the best, and it just didn't cut it. Maybe I got a fluke...I'd like to try again if I'm in the area, but so far it's just OK.

Great pizza. If you live in Costa Mesa and you want quality and great tasting pizza this is your place. Its a small hole in the wall pizza shop next to a 7/11. Ever since ordering a pizza from here I've been a loyal customer. The 5 dollar lunch specials (2 slices of pizza w/ a drink) throughout the weekdays are also great for lunch.

Al's So this unassuming New York Cafe has many delights. I would start off with just ordering the meat balls. This will keep you coming back for more. They are good any which way and even on their own. Another choice would be their Meat Lasagna. On my recent quest for Lasagna this was one of my stops. The portion size is large, so I recommend sharing. The garlic bread is a nice partner to this tasty treat. Now on to the pizza. They have great pizza. I prefer to eat it there, though space is limited... So if you go pick it up beware that it will get soggy if you leave it to long in the box. They have some of the best pizza in town. The service is friendly. Sometimes the kids working the counter are a little, will call it young. Forget about it. You will be happy with what comes out of the kitchen.

I had the pleasure of living within walking distance of this place for the past couple years. It's the best place I've found in California to grab a couple quick slices, and the pizza is consistently good.

A lot of hype, and I can't figure out why. Maybe I need to try it again. I was in the mood for 'za one night so I called ahead and put an order in for pick up. The employees I interacted with both over the phone and in person were super nice, and I really dig the look of the place. It's a cute little spot with not very much seating and entirely too much shady activity going on in the parking lot outside, but I like that. Orange County can be a bit too sterile sometimes. The pizza was just OK though. Maybe I had over-hyped it in my head. The crust wasn't as thin as I had hoped and is it wrong to say that it wasn't as greasy as I had hoped? Ah man, sorry. My inner fat kid is showing. It was fine, just a little on the bland side. That, coupled with my lofty expectations left me wanting more. I'd be down to try it again. Maybe it was an off-night.

WHAT?! How on earth does this place have above average reviews? A friend and I called and ordered 2 pizza's to be delivered. One pepperoni and sausage. One #5 Grilled Chicken Special pizza. The ordering experience wasn't exactly pleasant... the woman that took my order started randomly shouting instructions (I assume to her employees?) as I was trying to order, multiple times... But I figured, no big deal, it's Saturday night, must be busy? The pizzas are delivered 45 minutes later, per the ETA given over the phone. No problem there. The kids had no problem with the pepperoni and sausage... but said it wasn't their favorite. My friend tasted it and said the crust had a super meaty flavor, which I suppose may be good for some people? The #5 was lacking... everything. Chicken was dry and bland. No flavors in anything.. the most flavorful thing on the entire pizza was the green bell peppers. It reminded me of the time my husband told me he was gong to start eating healthy things like rice and beans... so he bought a giant bag of pinto beans and a giant bag of rice at Costco and told me it would taste just like Chipotle. I tried to explain to him that the prep there involves things like "seasoning" but he was not to be deterred. He was sorrily disappointed to find out that cooked rice and cooked beans with nothing else isn't quite the same as what is served at Chipotle. This pizza was basically the same thing. Just cooking ingredients doesn't guarantee flavor... it was like cardboard with bell peppers. Not even the cheese was good! How can you mess up cheese? We won't be ordering from there again.

This pizza is to die for. The owner is always friendly and helpful. Never had a bad pizza. I only wish they delivered to Irvine as since we moved it is so out of the way to go.

I had the pleasure of finding this gem on yelp when I was in a rush to find a luncheon delivery for one of my nearby clients. Michael and his team were so helpful, they over delivered, over serviced, and couldn't have made me or my clients (and their tummy's) more happier! Count on Al's for a prompt delivery and delicious flavors!

This place is awesome. I had been looking for a local pizza joint I could go to and I found it. As a bonus this place delivers. I still haven't even physically gone to it yet. Delivery is super easy if you use their online service (they even read your notes), If you call you will be greeted by a friendly, down-to-earth intelligent and very competent person. The delivery people are always super nice too. Their ingredients are super fresh and high quality. Today I ordered a 12" with eggplant, mushroom, zucchini and tomato with fresh garlic, basil and oregano. The fresh herbs are awesome and they know how to add all of those toppings without overdoing it. Ordering the small makes the crust less floppy in the middle when you order a ton of toppings. The only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars is the crust. It's not fantastic but it's good. Everything else makes up for it so I'm going with the 5. Happy pizza eating :-)

Pizza by the slice is much better than the stuff they deliver. Delivery pizza is not thin crust at all. Sandwiches are not very good. Stick to the pizza by the slice.

Damn it! Al's makes a great pizza. the Greek Special with feta, basil, garlic, etc. WOW. I was hooked and just cannot stop ordering from this place for lunch, which is great because they deliver. Their pizzas are super flavorful and the crust is thin. The cheese has a great texture, not rubbery like some other places. The pastas are pretty good, but the pizza trumps the pasta. The sandwiches are huge. A small can almost feed 2 for lunch. They're tasty! The prices are so, so reasonable. The staff is very friendly. HIGHLY recommend! One of the best pizza joints in OC.

Delicious food for a cheap price, what more can you ask for. This pizza is definitely authentic New York Pizza. Not only does it look like the ones from the teenage mutant ninja turtles movies but it's probably just as delicious. Thanks Al for bringing this new york taste to sunny California!

I was there tonight 8/23/14 at 9:50pm. The girl that was working there was sitting at the table counting money (Maybe her tips) When I walked in. No greeting, didn't even acknowledge my existence. I asked if they were still open. Without even looking at me she mumbled something so I asked again because I didn't hear her. She then again while counting money said "we're open till 10". So I stood there for awhile waiting for her to get up and take my order but she just sat there. Meanwhile the phone is ringing nonstop. Finally she gets up, rolls her eyes and goes behind the counter. I thought she was finally gonna take my order but she ignores me and answered the phone instead. I threw my hands up in frustration looked at everyone there and walked out. 1st impression is everything and that was a horrible 1st impression. If your rude and don't enjoy your job and don't care about your customers that pay your bills. Then go work at the DMV. That's a perfect job for you. I hope her boss sees this review. Btw. I tried to have the courtesy of talking to the manager or the owner before I wrote this review but they wouldn't answer the phone. I'll never go back there. Nice work grumpy girl.

Wow, the cashier at this place must be related to the owner because I don't know how else he can get away with such a bad attitude. It was mine and the bf's first visit and this guy gave us an indifference hi about 5 minutes after initially seeing us walk in. All his answers to my few questions were a quick yes or no (mostly no because he seems to like saying that better) without even looking up from the register. We took our slices to go because of him and guess what? We'll never be back. Here's a tip: go to Slice of NY in Seal Beach. Great pizza, no tude.

We ordered a large 3 ingredient pizza using a coupon. They left out the side of marinara sauce (which they charged $1 for). I called them and they said their delivery driver had already gone home for the day (1:30pm on a Sunday afternoon) and they would credit us back the dollar. While on the phone, he tried to do it and messed up apparently and SCREAMED obscenities in my ear at his mistake. I hung up. I now see where I was CHARGED twice $22.62 and $21.54. I'm reporting them to the Orange Co Better Business Bureau. Plus, the pizza was certainly nothing resembling a NY slice, was cold when it arrived, and wasn't very good even when reheated. DO NOT EVER GO HERE!!

I've been going to this establishment for over 14 years and will continue to do so. Needless to say their pizza is awesome! But, what I often come here for is their baked ziti and roast beef supreme sandwich. Al, the owner is a stand up guy. You can tell he embraces his job and loves his clientele. You can often find him chatting with the local customers who appear to be regulars like me. Love this joint!

This was the first delivery pizza joint I tried upon moving to Newport and while it isn't bad pizza, their style isn't what I'd expect from a traditional New York slice. The pizza was a bit of the doughy and the recommendation of a buffalo chicken pizza didn't quite sit right with my roommate and I after we intended on ordering a BBQ chicken pizza. We also ordered an Italian sub which was better than the pizza. Delivery was fast but the second time I tried to order from here they weren't delivering (it was 3PM on a weekday) so it seems the delivery hours vary from time to time.

For me this is a "to go" place! Small cramped & in a strip mall by 7-11 but the food is really good, really! Got the penne in pink sauce (delicious) and side of meatballs (come 4 to an order & covered in marinara sauce). All very good and very reasonably priced. Pizza is a top hit in my house! Yes, it's good. Try it. Nice service. Can order & pay online for pickup at sideorder.com Can't believe I never went here before...

Great food and a great spot to grab a quick bite. The staff was great and some guy Big Al worked the counter and made me feel like I was back in NYC. He plays the role and looks the role perfect and you can tell he is and old school pizza guy from NYC. The pizza was thin, hot and a great value. I am not sure how healthy this place is but then again if you are going to treat yourself to some classic Italian I am not sure its ever healthy! Keep up the good work and I will be back soon.

I have been a vegetarian for almost 10 years. So it was to my surprise that when I bit into my sandwich when I got home it was TURKEY. I don't live close to the pizza place so it was a huge inconvenience to drive back. I wasn't very angry but expected compensation like a free sandwich or a coupon for my troubles. I work in the restaurant business and that's how it would've been handle at my work. I ended up getting a bag of chips (woopty do). I continued back home, sat down and to my surprise it was incorrect once again. No cheese. Whatever who cares right? It's the fact that they should've made sure it was 100% correct and perfect before sending it out again. I called back to let them know of their stupidity. A lady answered the phone and tried to tell me it was my fault and that I had not asked for cheese. She was rude with horrible customer service skills. She's better off staying away from food or people. I gave her my number and told her to give it to the manager to call me when he gets in (not sure what manager is not around to watch over his business). I can guarantee she did not write it down nor gives two shits about my allergy to white meat and how I could've had an allergic reaction. Foods not good enough to hassle myself again. Bye.

    - Locale destination - Hole in the wall place. It's very tiny and far from fancy. A few tables both inside and outside. But don't be fooled by the looks. - Gluttony expedition - My friend who knows NY pizza told me this is it! Cheese and pepperoni pizza.

Best NY-style pizza we've found in California. Al sponsored our Little League team. Great thin-crust pizza. Get the $5 dollar special of two slices and a drink. Fast, hot and great (for California).

NY-style pizza in CM...cant hate on that. grab 2 slices (1 cheese, 1 pepperoni), you will not regret it. perfect blend of crunchy yet foldable crust, sauce, and cheese. top off with a little chili pepper and im in heaven. hit that pizza. still have yet to try the pasta, maybe at a later time.

This was a pretty good pizza. It's no N.Y. but it was real good. I got the sausage pizza and that was on point. The sausage had a strong distinct taste to it and they didn't over put sauce in it. It's one of the better pizza spots I've had in the OC area. I would eat here again if I was craving a slice of pizza. Recommendation: Sausage Pizza

Love This Place: At our House Friday Night is Pizza Night!!! My husband and kids always want Al's Pizza. Love the crust but most of all that they don't skimp on the toppings. Sauce is great. . Oh don't forget to find their discount coupons in the Money Mailer. Sandwiches are filled with meat and the bread is supper soft French bread. If you have not tried Al's I would recommend you hurry down and try them. You have been missing out..

It used to be good, but like so many others they got cheap. $18 for a XL pizza that was so sad. I don't care for pizza much but my husband does. He gave it a big sad disappointed thumbs down. Go to House of Pizza instead.

This place serves insanely good pizza. As you can see, most of the negative reviews on here are regarding the customer service. I've never had a problem with the ordering here. There can be a lot teenagers hanging around this place after school... but it's a half block away from a high school so that's pretty normal. Go and grab some amazing pizza at this place.

I have to admit that I am not the biggest pizza fan out there. Therefore I don't usually eat pizza but in this case a combination of special occasion, the only food that was available and massive hunger convinced me to give it a shot. I tried a slice of their grilled chicken and their NYC special pizza. They were okay but I had better.. I don't think I would go out of my way to get my pizza fix (if I would ever have a craving for pizza). My coworkers did like the food so I guess my weird taste buds are to blame for my lack of appreciation for Al's..

This place doesn't pretend to be something its not. Its really more of a takeout place than dine-in but there are a handful of tables inside and out for you to crash with your hot pizza. When you arrive for dine-in, the young hostess/waitress tells you that ALL the tables are dirty and you need to wait while she wipes them down. If you ask to use the restroom, she asks the dude in the back. "How's the bathroom" because it's "a bit scary." I love it. She's so matter of fact and that's the way it should be. You are asking to use the bathroom of a PIZZA parlor, not a Ritz Carlton. The large pepperoni and mushroom fed 3 adults perfectly. Its a lil greasy and extremely generous with the fresh mushrooms. I'd so come back.

We randomly found Al's (hidden off the beaten path of 17th street), and decided to check it out. Ordered a BBQ sandwich and it turned out great! Average price, chill customer service, and a nice variety of sandwiches, pasta, and pizza. Overall, Al's is worth trying out.

All's rocks! I like how the owner is usually around and there service is great. My faves include the pizzas of course and the roast beef supreme sandwich. Fast friendly service and good deals for lunch on the cheep have me recommending All's anytime a pizza debate comes up. They also have a better Greek Salad than the "Greek" place a block down the street. and for the same price as the "Greek" place All's added chicken. I love small local non corporate spots like All's and I will be a loyal customer as long as I live in Orange County. Thanks All keep up the good work!

*tear drop* I never thought this day would come (next to me uttering the words "I do"), that I'd find a pizza joint that was molto buono and within drunken stumbling distance - actually I think this is the condition everybody is in when they're eating and writing a review cuz so far it seems as though that every pizza joint in Newport/Costa Mesa gets 4-5 stars even though I've been to two so far in the area that's not worth going back to (Originals and some other place off of 17th). The quality of ingredients, good friendly service (Mike the main man taking the orders), and I think I even saw them "cook-to-order" some sauteed veggies before throwing it onto the pie!? All impressive!, but maybe my eyes were deceiving me kind of like the time that I saw that chick pool side get up topless (yes, boobies, but I do need lasik). The only critical part is that the bottom crust wasn't as crispy as I would have liked it to be, but a couple minutes in the oven on the bottom level remedied that..... who doesn't like a crispy tanned golden brown bottom, I'm still thinking of the chick poolside, but that goes the same for pizza's.

Stopped by for lunch on a random week day off work. I live so close to this place, but everyone raves about the lunch special! Finally got to try it. $5 will get you two (large) slices of pizza and a drink. Make sure you have cash, otherwise they add 50 cents if it's under $8. The slices were very large and floppy, just like in NY. Gotta fold to eat! I enjoyed the pizza, and I'd even come back, but it didn't wow me and it definitely doesn't beat my fav pizza place.

When I stopped in here to other day to get a fresh slice of peperoni pizza, I asked why I hadn't yelped them before. I am a NY transplant and have been in search of good pizza since I came out. This is the closest that I have found and comes complete with attitude. So, as a NY pizza snob, this is a place to brag about. If you want California pizza, don't come here. Well, they do have a good white pizza, but you can get those in NYC too. The place is small and not one that is great to sit down and eat, though it is feasible. Usually, I will just stand and eat if I get it there, but it is best as take out. As it is good thin crust, watch the tippage and sliding cheese when you place it in the car.... No beer or wine. 7-11 next door allows you to supplement your trip with your favorite beverage. Damn. Now I'm hungry.

I went here yesterday to get the fettucini alfredo pasta and a greek side salad with garlic bread. I woke up at 4am with severe stomach pains and nausea. I got FOOD POISONING from this place and have been throwing up ever since! The "cook" handling my pasta used his hands to grab the pasta and re-boil the noodles. He heated up the sauce in the back. He washed his hands after he made my food. NOT BEFORE. He did not use any soap and quickly rinsed his hands with just water. Why I even ate my food I do not know, but I'm paying the price.

Al's is where it is at. I enjoy coming to Al's for pizza. They have been hit or miss a few times... but mostly I can say good things about Al's. The veggie pizza is unreal. So many toppings it is mind boggling. The standard pep was a little disappointing... not enough grease or pepperonni. I enjoy a large slice of pizza covered with cheese grease and quality meat. Al's usually does the trick 2 out of 3 times. I would suggest this place over any chain pizza spot.

Food is really good, cooks and guys that work there are cool, But the chicks that work there have a horrible attitude everytime i call or go in. If i didnt live across the street, i would not go there cuz of there attitude. I would give this place a 5 star if it were'nt for them. I highly recommend the owner to fire all the chicks that work there. Typical OC bitches!

The customer service at this place is terrible. The owner Al and his cashier employees almost pick and choose who they will cater their customer service to. I had been going to this place for quite a while because the pizza is good and had been putting up with their terrible customer service. Each time that I had gone either Al or the cashier were very indifferent in taking my order. It was almost as they were annoyed that I was ordering, I mean come on I'm bringing you business! The last straw came one day when I came in for a slice and the cashier told me they could not sell me a slice, I told him I could wait if they had to make it and Al standing next to him rudely told me, "did you not hear, we are not selling slices right now" I simply walked out. It's a shame that this place has such terrible customer service since their food is good.

It's been 15 years since I've had a real NY pizza and man was it good. How do you know it's a NY style joint, well they sell pizza by the slice not like other Cali shops where you gotta buy a whole pie. The slice crunchy, cheesy, and the sauce was not salty like everyone else. From a Brooklyn guy this place is the best in OC.

Yum! I'm so happy I stumbled upon this place via yelp. I was looking for a pizza joint with that perfect crust (what can I say, I'm a lil picky), and after trying sooo many nearby I was begining to lose hope. Al's to the rescue (cue superhero music- i like the indiana jones theme song). The pies are delish and they also have a double slice lunch special. My girl loves the cheese pizza here and now asks for "Al's" by name.

This place is AMAZING! A small, sweet little New York pizza shop that makes the most delicious Italian food I've ever eaten! I love their pastrami subs, pepperoni pizza, and Greek salads. Oh and their chicken Parmesan pasta dish that comes with salad and garlic bread! Prices are unbeatable. They deliver for no extra fee! Simply the best in the area.

I used to frequent this place everytime I was down in Newport. I'd order and drive down to the pier, find a lifeguard tower, eat, and watch the sunset. It's in a somewhat of a dinky mini plaza, but just find the 7-Eleven and the place is right next door. I ALWAYS order the baked ziti. Sometimes I ask them to add chicken into it which always makes it better. The penne is always cooked al dente and the tomato sauce is very tasteful. It comes with garlic bread and a salad. It's literally feeds two. Another fav of mine here is the calzone! I don't know what it is about calzones here, it's delish. I ask for extra marinara on the side so I can dunk it in. I'm drooling thinking about how amazingly good it is. I highly recommend this one. Lastly, their chicken parmesan sandwich is killer. I love eating it because it's kinda messy. I've tried their pizza once, but I don't think I'm a big NY pizza fan. I actually enjoy the the bread/crust. I love my carbs, alright?! Now, who wants to take a trip with me to get a calzone???

If you are looking for real New York style pizza I would go to Al's. Their ingredients are delicious and the crust is not too thin or thick. I usually order the pizza well done to prevent any sogginess. Their salads are very fresh. One of my favorite dishes at Al's is the Chicken Parmesan sandwich. It is very large. It also comes with potato chips. I don't really think that goes with Itialian but, hey they are free. It could actually feed two people. However, I have eaten one by myself before. YUM!!! I think I will go get one now.....

This is a little slice of New York in the heart of surf country. Al's New York Deli offers sandwiches, pasta dishes and pizza in a low key and cost-effective manner. I found this place via a write up in Westways Magazine (the publication of the So Cal AAA). Al's New York Deli was featured as a cheap but good lunch alternative. The advice was spot on. I met a friend here for lunch and we went dutch, sharing a large host pastrami and a 2 slice special. The result: we each had a good size pastrami sandwich, slice of pepperoni pizza and beverage for just over $7's each. We were full by the time we were done. My pizza had a glaze of cheese and pepperoni grease on top which quickly disappeared with a good napkin blotching. It was excellent. The crust was super thin (my preferred version of pizza) and the taste of cheese and pepperoni was quality. The pastrami was a thicker cut meat that was a bit on the dry side. I got hot mustard on the side and the mustard delivered as my sinuses burned and my eyes watered. Their hot pastrami is served with melted cheese and dill pickle slices. It is a good mix, and the total combination was excellent (See the photo I uploaded). We arrived at 11:30 which was about five minutes before 40 high school students showed up for their off campus lunch period. The teens were gone by noon, so it is a brief rush, but if you can avoid it, you will be a happier consumer. This place is a solid value that delivers on the basics. Al's New York Deli left me wanting to return to further explore the menu with the money it left in my pocket.

OK, so I've got a friend who is from Jersey and a total pizza snob. I constantly try and get her to try different pizza places, she is always disappointed. I finally found this place with the help of the yelp crew and suggested going there. I told her "they all say it's New York style piz-", but before i can finish my statement she says "I'll believe it when i see it." Challenge accepted! We headed over to Al's ordered the 2 slice/drink combo for $5 (great deal BTW) we got cheese and pepperoni. We also got a calzone. Both dishes were great. The pizza was thin and crispy. The calzone was tasty too. I'm going to have to go back many more times to try the rest of the menu.

This place is legitimately cool. I walked in 12/19/2012 just to check it out & came across the pricing which was in my option too good to pass up. Unfortunately they were getting ready to close and didn't have anything prepared. But as I got ready to leave they offered me the last slices they had available and a complimentary drink. To my surprise, Those slices of Pizza were incredible! Honestly. I'm very picky on what kind of pizza I like & I highly recommend this place on the quality of service and food (Nice & Greesy Yeah,!!!). Thanks guys for being so cool.

I used to live across the street from this place and after eating my first pizza from this place (pepperoni, mushrooms, tomatoes) I was HOOKED!!! Took a lot of will power not to go out there every night for something new off their menu. Sad that I moved so far away, haven't been able to find a place that comes close to these guys!

Have been a regular for years. Pizza is really good but the service is dreadful. When the owners is not there, it's run by a bunch of kids who could care less. The girls behind the register ignore you unless you bring them beer. Kind of strange. We're on to other pizza places that are better run and care about customer service.

We got the 16" NYC Special for $18.75. At first glance, I wasn't too impressed. The sausage seemed sparse and I never saw any chunks of garlic, but I could definitely smell it. Picking up a slice, I needed to give it a nice fold in order to avoid flopping over. Definitely a good sign, although it's not quite as thin, wide, or greasy as a traditional NY slice. It was also very light on the sauce, typical NY style, but I would have preferred a bit more. Does any of this matter compared to the taste? Not really. It was wonderfully cheesy and garlicky, which is right up my alley. The sausage was savory and delicious, and the onions were perfectly cooked. Definitely worth a quick trip for such a hot, fresh pizza. Minus a star for need of more sauce and the fact that they wouldn't deliver to our apartment only 2 miles away... really? Really.

They guy who took care of my and my boyfriend when we went in was so nice. It was our first time in and man was I cranky... nothing could put a smile on my face, I was sick and just coming home from the doctor... surprisingly the guy who helped us was so nice. We ordered a large pizza and the specialty and we had to wait a bit (not even that long) and the guy gave us free drinks just for having to wait... DEFIANTLY WILL BE BACK :)

The calzones are what keeps me coming back. Super flaky crust and cheesy goodness inside. There's no service, but the food speaks for itself.

My favorite slice of pizza this side of the 55. Maybe ever. Oily as all hell. Makes the Parmesan and red pepper flakes stick to the slice and melt into the mozzarella just the way I like it. I used to stop by this spot religiously, at least twice or three times a week when I was working nearby. It's location is awesome for an after-meal walk through the lot - I'd walk down to Ralph's across the street, smoke a cigar in front of La Cave, or just sit in my car and listen to the radio. $5 for two huge slices and a refillable drink ain't bad in my book - especially when the pizza's this good. Not a fan of dodging through some of the high school crowd that gathers here, but I have to remind myself that too was a kid, and probably much worse to be around at that age than any of these little guys. Drop by the 7-Eleven next door if you're looking to have a beer with your pie, and keep on...

This is pretty much the only legit NY pizza I've ever had in Orange County. I knew I'd come to the right place when I walked in for the first time and the customer chatting with one of the workers had a THICK Brooklyn accent. I don't know what to say except that, if you're an east coast ex-pat like I am and you're jonesin' for a little taste of home, grab a pie at Al's, fold up a slice, and thank me for the trip down memory lane.

5 stars because this is the most authentic tasting NY pizza that I've found outside of NYC. I should know because I lived there for four years and had pizza three to four times a week. Tastes pretty much like the ones in NYC. Small take out pizzeria with lots of italian (non pizza) dishes which I have not tried but hear are great. There are a few small tables inside with a tv wavering above head and a few table outside. It is a great quick NYC pizza fix if you don't mind the teenie boppers that hang out from the local high school.

We live near this place and gave it a second chance last night after hearing how great the pizza was. First time we ordered was 6 months ago and the crust is so undercooked and soggy that you have to cut it with knife and fork to eat it. If you even attempt to pick it up, it falls apart in your hands. Last night we gave it another try and same exact thing. Ordered for a party of 8 and nobody liked it. Their crust is so soggy it's like they soak it in water. YUK! Not sure how this place stays in business.

I am not an expert on New York style pizza, but all I know is Al's pizza is rocking GOOD! Loaded with toppings, good crust, decent sauce, plenty of cheese. Unfortunately I live about 10 miles away, so not within the delivery zone of that adorable pizza delivery boy, Chris. I would, however, stay away from the pasta. Having lived in italy, I do know pasta, and this just doesn't quite cut the mustard. WAY too much sauce (ask for it on the side), not a high quality pasta. My spaghetti with meat sauce wasn't horrible, it just wasn't anything I'd ever order again. Next time I will stay with the pizza, and NOT be disappointed! :)

I've been a customer of Al's for years (since 1999 or so) and always enjoy going there. There may have been some inconsistencies with flavor of the pizza sauce back in the day, but nothing to be cranky about. Al is always happy to say hi and "talk shop" whenever I see him. 2 slices and a drink are still $5 ??? Either I'm getting a good deal now, or was getting ripped-off then !! LOL....jk. Cashiers and Drivers come and go, but most of the cooks are still the same...that has something to be said.

One of the better "pizza by the slice" joints in the Newport area. Because it shares a parking lot with 7-11 you will sometimes have a little trouble with parking but don't let that deter you from cashing in on the deal of the century: 2 slices and a soda for $5. I'm a fan of the Meatball Hoagie, but everything I've had has been great. The pizza comes in thin, fold-able slices with just enough sauce and oil from the melted cheese. Give Al a try and don't forget to tip.

Delicious every time. 2 large slices and a drink for $5.00! Seriously good deal. The calzones are excellent, so is the anti pasta and the fettucini alfredo. Highly recommend to all my friends, especially my in-laws (who are from Brooklyn). They love it and you will too.. It's the way a pizza joint is supposed to be. Thx Al, I hope this place never changes :)

Awesome pizza and Italian. We hit up this place when we crave for pizza and pasta. They always have lunch specials. They make the best greek pizza and sausage, tomotoes, and mushroom pizza anywhere. Place is always busy during lunch.

  • Jeff K.

Just know one thing: you get ALOT of food. Share or pack it for lunch the next day. but rarely will you finish a single entre by yourself. so have Italian night with that special someone ;) FYI, It's the small italian joint next to 7-11 if you're having trouble scoping for it. Though most reviews talked about their pizzas, I usually get pasta. And the pasta is good and cheap ($9-10). They have lasagna on Wednesdays and Fridays too.

Some of THE BEST pizza I've had from CA to NYC! If you're a guys guy and like garlic and onions the NYC Special is the way to go otherwise the cheese or pepperoni is amazing!

Pretty good NY style pizza...they have a $5 lunch special that gets you 2 huge slices (cooked just right but too oily) and a drink. Service was ok..nothing exceptional. Good unhealthy alternative to the $5 subway footlong deal.

Al's is a little hole-in-the-wall type restaurant with barely any seating but the food is fantastic. I used to work right across the street so it was easy but I'm still willing to make a 20 min drive to go there instead of other places. The best things are any of the pizzas, especially the white pizza. The crust is thin if you like to fold your slices and the ingredients are all good. I also like their Wednesday, Friday lasagna specials. If you are looking for a good meal with good prices then try this place out.

Great pizza, had the NYC special with pepperoni, sausage, onion, garlic and double cheese. It probably moved my heart attack up by several years but it had great flavor. With a coupon it was $15 for an XL. They would have gotten 5 stars except for the girl running the register with the "I believe " tattoo on her back. She was RUDE Sneering at me the whole time I had to be there placing my order, she was unpleasant enough I almost walked out and got some Mexican.

Al's would get five stars from me, but it's just not close ENOUGH to new york style pizza to get the full on fiver. BUT it is damn good, so I am definitely a fan. Get the pizza or the calzones, and not a salad--not that salads are bad there, but seriously, why go to a pizza place to get a bowl of the toppings on some lettuce? I like just a regular old pepperoni pizza and then will head next door to the 7-11 while I wait to get drinks. they also have lunch specials, in case you're into that; but I prefer to just get a pizza and go. Honestly, I've been to NYC many times and used to live in Chicago, so I know good pizza, and this place is definitely worth a try or two if you've never been.

I love pizza so much and probably feed the addiction two or three times a week. Not three hundred pounds, because I drink hot tea immediately afterward to keep the belly down. Also have gin instead of beer. Well, enough about me, and let's talk about Al's. Really good pizza slices. I'd definitely recommend eating it there onsite when it's fresh & hot out of the oven. Doesn't really travel all that well (cheese hardens). Need to try out their sandwiches as I'm sure they are tasty. Quality place.

For a little hole in the wall, this place has some pretty good food. The pizzas are top notch. They do a good white pizza! Surprisingly, we've had the Alfredo pasta and a ziti and just regular spag with meat sauce, and all are delicious. They deliver here. The delivery doesn't take much time at all. These guys seem to care about the food they serve. I'd much rather eat here than say Pasta Bravo. I don't know why people frequent those bad chain restaurant.

So by now it should be clear that I'm some sort of socially phobic, food loving hermit who mostly eats food from places where I can get it to-go and take it back home to enjoy on my couch surrounded by cats. Let's just add Al's to the list of restaurants who adequately cater to my specific needs. Al's is wedged next to a 7-11 behind-ish La Cave in what must be the most dilapidated strip mall in Newport Beach. Although Al's is about as charming as the strip mall itself, it doesn't detract from the food (once you get it home, I mean seriously - get the heck out of there). Great thin crust, no fuss pizza. Kind of a sweet taste to the crust too, which I really like. I also enjoy their deli sandwiches. Awesome soft, crusty bread, high quality lunch meats, and just the right proportion of all the toppings. The sandwiches are just as low-key and no fuss as the pizza, which sometimes is all I really want or need. One suggestion, if you go with a sandwich don't get it served hot - they over toast the bread and the sandwich becomes a carbon crusted log of oven taste.

Love this place. Just discovered it a couple of weeks ago from a co-worker, and I think I went to lunch there 4 or 5 days in a row. Their pizza is legit. The crust is just right.. not too thin or thick, and crunchy bottom crust. There is also a little bit of pizza grease that floats on top of the cheese, which is magical. I also ordered their Italian sub, and that was very good as well. Good bread for sandwiches, and also deli meat. Good service. Don't expect any fancy decor, it's just meat and potatoes man -heck, there's a 7/11 next door, but you go for the food - which is true blue, NYC pizza.

Not to long ago, I was actually bullied by another reviewer on Yelp because of what I said in my original review. That was weird. Anyways, we decided to call in for pizza here last night on the way home from the airport. We were put on hold for a pretty long time and since I am trying to get used to the Blue tooth hook up in my BMW (with the new law and all) hubby could here the message that was playing while on hold. They started to talk about the lasagna special available Wednesday and Friday. We changed our mind and got it instead of the pizza. As always, service was great when we got there. But the lasagna was just kind of o.k.. A bit greasy not too salty. The bread and salad that came with it were pretty good. A good standby on the way home from the airport for sure.

We've got some awesome pizza in the neighborhood, but lately it's been all about Al's. We like the thin but never drenched crust, the rich flavors and the tasty ingredients. I get pepperoni and onion and it's just greasy and salty enough. Great pie!

I went here after working out with my friend from college. He told me about this amazing pizza he had, and I could not resist. He was indeed correct, as this was some of the best pizza I had had in a long time. I was watching them make an eggplant parmigiana sandwich and almost passed out it looked so good! I had two slices of cheese pizza, and a drink for $5. I'm going back again for sure.

in my never ending search for good italian sandwiches, I was sent here by someone who was supposed to know. Place smelled right and pizza looked good, but I was there for a sandwich. So I ordered a sub, imagining something like I might get in NJ, like at a certain deli in Lodi, maybe. nah. Really, mayo?? On a sub?? and generic pink meat a la subway? Really? No gabagul? no salami, no oil? Weird attitude of young manager hanging out on patio in front. Weird, like kind of repellent. WTF? Keep looking.

The $5 dollar 2 peice's of pizza and a drink combo is everything I need in life. From lunch until dinner this is served and does the trick to fill an empty stomach before or after the drinking has started. But seriously it doesn't stop there, the side salads are amazing, and the sandwiches are great.

Even though living in Italy was one of the greatest experiences of my life, it did have some rather disheartening after-effects. The most poignant was a relentless addiction to quality bread and quality pizza. While the bread produced in this country is sub-par, our pizza deserves to be sent back to kindergarten. The reason? The crust is absolute crap. The lowest quality ingredients, quick-rise yeast, and low cooking temperatures make for a tasteless insult to the concept of pizza that bears no resemblance at all to its noble heritage. No country, not even France, takes their bread as seriously as Italy and the crust of a pizza is no exception to that rule. Each pizzeria has their own unique recipe for the crust based on a combination of yeast strains, poolish (sourdough cultures) and other ingredients contributing to the unique, hearty flavor of a true Italian pizza. I haven't spent enough time in New York to know what New York pizza tastes like, nor can I say that this pizza equals the pizza in Rome or Naples. But Al's takes the concept of pizza more seriously than any other pizzeria in Southern California. The crust is crispy, flavorful and lightly charred. They also sautee their toppings rather than a simple sprinkle and bake, for an extra dose of authenticity. I have become slightly addicted to the pizza here and I show up at least twice a week (it is right across the street) for a slice or two. You can find pizza like this in a high-end restaurant setting, but for a casual pizzeria, this place has all others soundly beaten, hands down.

Gotta love this place for the greatest pizza in my area! Recently tried their special combos #5 Grilled Chicken & #4 NYC Special. #4 NYC Special I don't eat pepperoni and perfectly, my roommate doesn't eat sausage. So what we ended up doing was half sausage and half pepperoni and then we added Canadian bacon as well as jalapenos on top. HMMMMM!!!!! #5 Grilled Chicken OMG! The best pizza ever! They make the pizza base first with chicken, tomato sauce, cheese, etc. And then they pan fried the onions and green peppers, when the pizza is half done, they take out the pizza and throw the onions and green peppers on top. OH MY GOODNESS, when I saw that I could swear I drooled a little because the was DELICIOUS!!!!! I love this place. I wouldn't move anywhere else as it is across from where I live. I ain't going no where for the sake of Al's Cafe pizza! Clovah ^m^\/ How I base my ratings: 5*: Dying to go back 4*: Regularly go back 3*: Go back once a month 2*: Only goes if my friends go 1*: Never EVER want to go back

Best Pizza slices in town! You can't beat the 2-slices-and-a-drink special for 5 bucks. Slices are thrown in the oven as soon as you order them. They come out thin and crispy, with stringy cheese and a good sauce. There's even a guy in there who looks like he's from New York (might be Al himself?). I've been frequenting this spot every other week for the last three months without any regrets. You should see all the "OC Housewives" looking moms that run through this place. I guess the pastrami sandwich is pretty good here, but my heart goes for the pizza when I come here, and when my heart needs pizza I come here. One day pastrami sandwich, one day...

Yay for Al's! My first choice when I'm too lazy to go out for food. I live right next to this place and always call them for delivery. Their delivery guy is pretty friendly as well :) I haven't tried a lot of their food yet, but their pizza is oh-so-gooood! Other than the pizza I've only tried their pinksauce pasta. Its not GREAT but its decent. Their tiramisu is veryyy good as well. Not sure if they are homemade but I can't seem to find tiramisu close to their's. The place isn't really a dine-in thing. So don't expect much if you decided to actually go there and eat. Its a pizza parlor after all.

Al's New York Cafe Pizza rocks. I love the combo two slices with a drink. I have only tried the pizza, but I know they make calzones, lasagna and salads. The workers are always friendly, and the food is made fast and served Hot. I like the pepperoni and the hawaiin. 05/20/2011 I came here last night after a long walk/run. I ordered two slices of pizza with ham and pineapple and a large Antipasto salad ($8.50). The salad was my favorite, the pizza was great after I baked it for 15 minutes. I prefer my pizza crust to be a little crispy. The pizza and the salad were huge. The salad was packed in one of those large aluminum dishes, that they usually serve lasagna in. The salad had tettuce, tomatoes, red onion, bell pepper, pepperoncini, mushrooms, black olives, cotto salami, hard salami mortadela and shredded mozzarella. Yummeerzzz!

As much as I am prejudiced against pizza joints explicitly calling their pizza "New York" style, this place pulls it off quite nicely. Between the slightly rundown ambiance, old dirty pizza ovens (did they ship them from NY?), and sticky communal salt/pepper/garlic/parm shakers, I honestly felt like I was back home at a local pizzeria. The only thing missing was the glass display cases of pizza. As for the pizza itself, it's by far the best slice of pizza I've had in Cali. Just-crispy-enough crust, nice greasy cheese that you let drip out after you fold it, and the slices are pretty big. 2 slices with toppings and a soda for $5 flat? Score! And I can charge it? Double score! I did find it a little odd that it seems whatever topping you order, they just toss it on top of a pre-made plain slice, sprinkle on some cheese and stick in the oven for a couple of minutes. But I guess that's just how it is if you want your choice of toppings on a single slice. Overall, you have converted me, Al -- not all pizza on the west coast sucks balls.

I don't care what anyone else thinks or says on his review unless it's positive. If you don't like it, then you're just a picky eater with a taste bud disorder and have too much time on your hand to whine. Al brings the true taste of New York with pizzas, sandwiches, and pastas. You may think twice because of the hole of the wall appearance, but you will wonder why there are always customers at Al's New York Café. 2 slices of pizza and a soda for $5 is worth the trip.

service could be better but you won't spend much of your time interacting. The ZA is solid. Individual slices come out good but when you order a whole pizza, the crust is too soft. Overall: good NY style pizza for the area.

I grew up on this pizza so, I guess I am partial. It is my favorite style of NY pizza: thin crust, cheesy, dripping with olive Oil. Also, Al is a great guy who I have had do a ton of catering and he does a great job with epic food. The best around for legit NYC pizza and pasta. Oh, the pastrami sandwich is off the chain.

I thought this place was good. We ordered a the NY pizza. The toppings were good and the price was okay. I asked for extra crispy and was a bit let down. If they had come through with the crust they would have had a solid 4 star review.

I've only tried this place once but really enjoyed it. It is a little out of the way but I wouldn't feel uncomfortable parking there. La Cave and Blockbuster are right there so I wouldn't worry. I ordered the NYC Special which seems to be fairly authentic NY pizza. It has pepperoni, sausage, garlic, double cheese and onion. It was cooked well, in an oven of course. Solid "char" to the crust. Very tomato-y sauce and good cheese. Prices seem a bit high but if you live around there, the local grocery stores have coupons as does valpak (mailer coupons) which makes it a better deal. I'll be back.

If you love N.Y. style pizza, this is the best I've had in O.C. The seating area is maybe 150 sq. ft. plus some outside tables. For 5 bucks you get 2 slices and a coke.

This is one of the first pizza places I have tried in the OC since moving from Santa Monica and it did not live up to my expectations. I don't really understand why this place has "New York" in their name because nothing about their pizza was "New York". I decided to keep my order simple and got the cheese pizza. The cheese to crust ratio was off -- there was waaay too much cheese and it had a rubbery texture. And the crust was not thin enough and definitely not crispy enough. Another sign that this was not "New York" style pizza -- you cannot fold it in half. Overall, the pizza was ok but if they're trying to claim that they're "New York" style, they should really change their name. I definitely would not go out of my way for this place. Instead, I would rather drive up to Joe's in Santa Monica, Vito's in West Hollywood or Valentino's in the South Bay.

I never cared for New York style pizza until I went to Al's. I'm not sure what they do, but their pepperoni pizza is amazing. I wish they had better seating, its really more of a place to pick up the pizza and leave. You must try this place.

Finally! And yes, it was pretty darn delicious. My roomies and I ordered a couple of pizzas to go and it was awesomeness. Two xlarge pizzas: 1/2 veggie, 1/2 NY Special, then a full combo. Mmmmm. Yummy. Nice and pipping hot, fresh ingredients, it all came together in a circle of deliciousness. Yes, the place itself is tiny, but it aren't most pizza joints in NYC? And besides pizza they have (gigantic) calzones, sammiches, pastas, etc. I thought the prices were consistent considering the quality of the food and the toppings, but my roomies were a bit skeptical since usually it is Domino's time.

Originally from New York, I can say that after being disappointed numerous times from pizza places advertising "New York Pizza", i was reluctant to try Al's. After seeing positive reviews in the OC Register and AAA's magazine, I decided i'd give it a try. This is the best New York style pizza i've had in Orange County... or for that matter... anywhere outside of Manhattan. My son ordered the angel hair pasta with alfredo sauce and it was one of the best i ever had. I was never a big fan of pasta alfredo, but Al's sauce was so creamy and tasty with a nice balance of garlic. Can't wait to go again.

I'm really glad that I don't live closer to this place, I would eat way too much here. I've only been here twice, so I can only comment on the pizza and meatball/Italian sausage subs. As you can see by my rating, I think they're great. The pizza is truly like you find in NY (eg Manhattan). It has a good thin crust that's a little crisp, very balanced, flavorful, and slightly acidic sauce. Generous, but not too much, amount of premium cheese. And the pepperoni is probably the best I've ever tasted. I will continue to come here, and will even go out of my way to stop here if I'm hungry for great pizza, or a sausage sub, or both!

  • Breanne W.

All I get here is a cheese slice, and it is the best one you can get in orange county. I dunno about their pizza with stuff on it...I always go with the standard issue cheese, and it is so good.

I gots my street creds being born and raised in nyc. 2 slices of sausage pizza it tastes good yo! I think they used a whole sausage just for the topping for my pizza, it was overflowing. crust is nice medium, little crunchy, little chewy. the sausage was overwhelming the taste of the cheese and sauce, but from what I noticed, it was good. and all this for a measly 5 bucks! better than Z Pizza that I usually go to. I must have looked like a noob, they gave me a free drink which was cool. I'm comin' back to try the chicken parm and pastrami sammiches!

I cant even believe I'm giving this two stars, but 1 star feels harsh (though somewhat deserved) Sorry Al, but how can garlic bread taste like crap? Seriously, even with ziti that was blah and smothered with bland sauce and cheese, you would think garlic bread could be redeeming. I mean...bread, garlic, butter..all components are delicious on their own so how can putting them together come out so lame? Basically this place succeeded in serving up the most bland tasteless Italian food I've ever had. Congrats. I did not try the pizza nor do I think I would based on the other food received. There is no way it can be good if they cant get garlic bread and ziti right.

Good sandwiches and chicken parmesan. Service was great and Al was great. Parking was tough but the food was worth it.

Be advised, I lived in New Jersey for 26 years and know what good Italian food tastes like. It's not here........food is decent enough if your starving, but if your looking for a nice Italian meal, look elsewhere. Side note, I wasn't too thrilled with the service either. Two employees were joking around behind the register while I waited patiently and my food was sitting in front of them, ready to be packed.

Maybe it's the off-the beaten-path and somewhat obscure location. Perhaps it's the menu that tempts you beyond good pizza. Or the boisterous New York accent (maybe Mr. Al himself?) that greets you from the kitchen. I don't know... but something about this Cafe makes me feel like I've stepped into a NYC oasis amidst the beach city that surrounds it.

Ok. I prefer Chicago-style pizza (go Pizano's!), but I wanted to give this place a chance. I was pretty surprised by the results. And yes, I've been treated to Lombardi's in NYC, so I've got my point of reference down. My boss K and her kids took me with them to "Friday Night Slurpee" night, as the 7-11 is their watering hole after dinner. She is known by Al as the "Ziti Lady", since the baked stuff is her all-time favorite there. I really wanted a vegetarian slice, but was informed they were so busy that cheese was the only slice option. Why not, I thought. If they can get a classic down, it would speak volumes for toppings. I learned a long time ago to base home grown operations by their take-out/delivery service. This place was not hurting for business. Explains the wait for our meals. K and P (the Silly Willy who joined us) had garden salads as their starter. The kids and I chilled with big cups of Barq's. A short wait later (10 minutes or less) the food began to emerge. My cheesy slice was lovely. I even remembered to fold it in half. Now while I can't properly articulate what made it better than "the best in NYC", I do know it was special. It also reeked of garlic. I could not shake the scent. Thank goodness I like it so much. The rest of the group shared a slab of lasagna (only offered Wednesdays and Fridays), fettuccini alfredo, and garlic cheese bread. It was carb loading at it's finest. Alfredo was more rich than I should've sampled. Cheese bread was full of chewy guilt. When can I go back? Time to try that pink sauce in spaghetti or maybe the Greek special pizza.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
